The balance of power

Connecting to election results…

Seats count only civicAPI-designated winners, plus 65 Senate seats not up for election from the workbook: D 32 · R 31 · I 2. Leads are not wins. Results are provisional, not official certification.

Races to watch

An editorial watchlist, not a competitiveness rating. Also includes uncalled races with reported votes and a margin of 5 percentage points or less.

02 / A possible future

What if the seats shift?

Choose a seat. Change its outcome. See how the arithmetic of governing changes.

Scenario follows live results until you make a change.

D = Democratic · R = Republican · I = independent/other · ? = unresolved. Senate election seats include Florida and Ohio specials; the other 65 seats remain fixed. All assumptions are local to this visit.

Caucus membership is a scenario assumption. At 50–50, the vice president can break ordinary Senate voting ties; organizational control may require an agreement.

The constitutional process

Impeachment & conviction

This tests numerical capacity, not intent or likely votes. Assumes a full House, all members casting a yes/no vote, all 100 senators present, and unified support by the selected group. House impeachment requires a simple majority of votes cast with a quorum present (218 if all 435 vote); Senate conviction requires two-thirds of senators present (67 if 100 are present). The vice president cannot supply the 67th conviction vote. Unresolved seats are not assumed supporters.
